James C. Barger DVM

Dr. Barger has dedicated his career to alternative approaches to common medical problems, used in concert with conventional medicine and nutritional counseling, to produce optimal health in your beloved family pets. dr-james-c-barger-roswell-ga

Dr. Barger began his career in Texas before moving to Alpharetta in 1980, where he worked at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Sandy Springs as one of two staff veterinarians.

In August 1982, he joined the North Fulton Veterinary Hospital (NFVH), where he worked with then owner, Dr. Jim Hugenberg, as well as at the hospital’s sister clinic, North Springs Animal Clinic (NSAC). In 1987, Dr. Barger purchased both practices, later selling NSAC to focus solely on his work at NFVH.

Licensed in Georgia since 1980, Dr. Barger has been a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association for 35 years and has received training and certification in Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM), a chiropractic-like treatment system.

In 2012, he purchased and received training on a MLS Harmony Laser, a cutting-edge therapeutic laser treatment system.

Dr. Barger graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979, magna cum laude, and served as secretary of the Eta chapter of Phi Zeta, the national veterinary honor society. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science from Texas A&M, magna cum laude.

He currently lives on a two acre mini farm in Alpharetta with his wife of 28 years, Gia, and 10 of his 12 children, as well as four English setters, one Old English sheepdog, two barn cats, a bunch of chickens, and two alpacas, (Danger and Sahara) who happily eat everything in the back yard, freak out the cats, and spit at each other! Sahara's fleece won 5th place in the 2012 national alpaca show in Ohio, a pretty good win for a 6 month old!

Dr. Barger enjoys camping, backpacking, gardening, coaching youth baseball, traveling with his beautiful wife, and training and hunting with his English setters, and plans to practice or work with animals in some capacity until forced to stop by poor health or the Grim Reaper.

Customer Testimonials

“Dr. Barger is absolutely wonderful. He is very professional and very good at explaining everything to you and really cares about your pet. I have had such bad experiences with vets before that I won't go to anyone else. They are the best!!!”
